PSA: 3rd-Party Adapters, Just say “NO!” Grandma-EV, April 3, 2024July 1, 2024 Wait for the approved adapter.Since GM announced the deal with Tesla for SuperCharger access, I have been SOOO excited to get access to the Tesla Charging Network. I have a 2019 Bolt. I rarely pay for charging… maybe 3 times a year? Yet, the prospect of Tesla charging still intrigues me. I also want, and might really need it, for my future Silverado EV, which will be my long-trip vehicle. There are a lot of 3rd-party adapters for sale online right now, some of them fairly cheap and probably sketchy. There are also some in the $200+ range that seem beefy and claim to be built to UL safety standards or UL-approved. The UP safety standard for NAC to CCS1 adapters is called UL 2252. At this writing, it is still being developed and has not been finalized. So maybe some are built to what is known of the standard right now, but certainly, none of them can yet be “certified!” I have seen reviews using some of these where they seem to work well enough. These 3rd-party adapters might be tempting to you?Just don’t do it! Tesla and every car manufacturer getting Tesla charging access have issued strong warnings to use only the approved or provided adapters for your make of vehicle. There is an enormous amount of current going through these adapters. Experts expect even the approved adapters will eventually have some that fail. This could result in damage to the charger, damage to your vehicle, or injury to yourself. If anything goes wrong with a non-approved adapter, you will be financially responsible for the damage. I do not want to pay to repair a SuperCharger or replace my battery. Do you? It is just not worth it. As excited as I am to try out NACS charging at a Tesla charger, I am not willing to take this risk or possibly void my warranties. I have watched several videos from Out of Spec talking about adapters. Yes, they have used some 3rd-party adapters for testing, but they strongly advise not to do this crazy, risky stunt. Here is a link to one of their videos that explains a lot: Tesla Charging Adapters And CCS/NACS Explained I have been disappointed with how long it is taking GM to come out with an announcement that GM vehicles now have access to the Tesla Charging Network. We know the deal is done with Tesla to grant GM customers access. I would have expected GM to announce access right after Ford and Rivian. I speculate that either the MyChevrolet App software isn’t ready, or GM is waiting for the adapters to be built and ready to hand out/sell so that people don’t use 3rd-party adapters like we see happening with Ford and Rivian. Again, that is just my speculation. I plan to wait, even though it is killing me! Share this:FacebookX Discover more from Grandma-EV Subscribe to get the latest posts sent to your email.
